Kevin Smith returns home to NJ for benefit show and new podcast theater opening

Kevin Smith returns to his hometown of Monmouth this spring for a week of Jersey-centric events.

Smith, 49, who just wrapped up his months-long Jay and Silent Bob Reboot tour, recently celebrated the second anniversary of the day he suffered a massive, near-fatal heart attack.

The major health event, which happened between two Smith shows scheduled in California, prompted the writer-director to go vegan, lose over 50 pounds and become a Weight Watchers ambassador.

A year after the heart attack, Smith began filming “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot”, the 2019 sequel to his 2001 film “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”.

The Red Bank native kicked off a tour for the film, the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot Roadshow, in Asbury Park last October.

Speaking to fans of the Paramount Theater, Smith announced that he will resurrect a tool in his podcast entertainment arsenal. Not only that, but he would also do it in New Jersey, right next to the Quick Stop convenience store he made famous in his classic 1994 movie “Clerks”.

Smith, who grew up in the Highlands, is set to reopen his previously operating SModcastle podcast theater in Los Angeles, in Leonardo’s location on April 20 (aka “4/20”, a near and dear day. at the heart of his characters Jay and Silent Bob). He solicited designs for the new SModcastle logo on social media.

Days after the theater opens, Smith will appear in West Long Branch for a performance to benefit the FilmOne Fest short film festival at Atlantic Highlands and the Atlantic Highlands Arts Council.

“An Evening with Kevin Smith” is scheduled for 9 pm on Friday, April 24 at Monmouth University’s Pollak Theater (400 Cedar Ave.) in West Long Branch (tickets $ 30- $ 40; visit

In other projects, the director brings back He-Man and Skeletor by directing a rebirth animated series “Masters of the Universe” for Netflix called “Masters of the Universe: Revelation”. He also worked on the screenplay for his sequel “Mallrats”, currently titled “Twilight of the Mallrats”.

Although “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot” was filmed in New Orleans, Smith plans to shoot his next View Askewniverse movie, “Clerks III”, at Leonardo’s Quick Stop. He says the film, which will star original cast Brian O’Halloran as Dante Hicks and Jeff Anderson as Randal Graves, will mostly revolve around the convenience store.

“Believe me, if ‘Clerks III’ happens, it will be in New Jersey,” Smith told NJ Advance Media in October. “It will be Leonardo, or it will not be.”

Smith also recently celebrated his appearance as a masked character in “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker” and his next guest as himself in “The Simpsons”.
