Local Plastic Surgeon’s Office Celebrates Female Patients on Breast Cancer Reconstruction Day – WHIO TV 7 and WHIO Radio

CENTERVILLE – Tomorrow is Breast Cancer Reconstruction Awareness Day, and a local plastic surgeon’s office is celebrating its patients.

Kayla Courvell of News Center 7 spoke to a local woman who shared how the reconstruction has helped her in particular.

In March 2020, as most countries around the world locked themselves in due to COVID-19, Angela Farley braced for a bigger battle – breast cancer.

“It was a whirlwind at first… scared to death… scared, uncertain,” Farley said.

Due to her family’s history with cancer, she opted for a bilateral mastectomy and chose to do reconstructive surgery with Dr. Matthew Fox at the Centerville Institute for Plastic Surgery.

“Everyone who walks in is like a deer in the headlights, they are terrified of a cancer diagnosis and my job is to tell them that most people are very successful with breast reconstruction,” Fox said.

A year and a half later, Farley is at the end of his rebuilding.

“Without cancer I feel great, I feel really great, almost done,” Farley said.

Plastic surgeon Jason Hedrick said a big part of his job is to educate patients about the process.

“It’s a lot of emotion, a lot of learning, we’re just trying to walk them through it to help them make an informed choice,” Hedrick said.

Like the different reconstruction options available to patients, and that it can be done at no cost to the patient.

“Reconstruction is a legally required covered benefit for insurance companies,” Hedrick said. “My job for me is to get someone to look at themselves in the mirror after all of this is done and say, I’m pretty damn good.”

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, the Institute of Plastic Surgery will celebrate Reconstruction Day at its Centerville location.

There will be food trucks, music, raffles and more.
