Over 1,100 child care victims of child victims taken into care
More than 1,100 children whose parents were caught up in the family allowance scandal were taken care of between 2015 and 2020, The figures from the national statistics agency CBS showed.
The case, which saw thousands of parents falsely accused of tax evasion, dates back to 2004, but the recording of this data did not begin until 2015 with the introduction of a new law on youth protection.
The figures were compiled at the request of the Ministry of Justice following questions from deputies.
It is not clear whether all of the children have been taken into care following the charges against the families, many of whom faced marriage breakdown or lost their jobs and homes as a result of tax demands. . More research on the cases is needed to determine this, CBS said.
The case led to the downfall of the government as well as calls for a more humane application of the rules in the Netherlands. Victims were recently invited to speak at coalition party talks to make the point, but many families are still awaiting compensation.
MEPs called on the government to explain the numbers. âBehind the CBS note lies an incredible amount of suffering,â they said in a note to ministers.
