Queens Road will benefit from improvements like the town center – www.watford.gov.uk

Watford’s popular and historic shopping destination, Queens Road, will benefit from a range of streetscape improvements by Watford Borough Council, to improve the look and feel of the area…

The six-month project, which will focus on the area from the High Street to the underground entrance that leads to Queens Road, will create an attractive and safe space in the heart of the city center that will provide a better experience as a place to meet, relax and enjoy.

Work will begin in early October and will include a comprehensive improvement plan for this bustling parade of shops, restaurants and other businesses. In mid-November, work will be temporarily halted after the Christmas period, with plans to resume work in early January 2023.

Benefits will include new granite paving and realignment of street furniture to open up the space to improve the pedestrian experience. A trio of new planters will also be introduced, to add some greenery to the area as well as some new seating. Other improvements will include new bike racks, painting of fixed bollards, as well as existing light columns and repositioning of existing bins.

Watford Mayor-elect Peter Taylor said: “The local town center is such an important part of our community and the past few years have been extremely difficult for business owners. These works, supported by local businesses, will make the district more attractive for residents and visitors and will help boost local commerce.

“A key commitment in my manifesto was to improve areas like this. I want to make sure that all areas of our city can benefit from programs like this at Queen’s Road and at smaller parades like Garston so that Watford remains a great place to live, work and visit.

Councilor Aga Dychton, Deputy Mayor and Community Portfolio Holder, said: “The area will be improved to provide a sustainable and vibrant local main street to support the community and local businesses for years to come. It will provide a better experience of Queens Road as a place to meet, relax and enjoy, providing an attractive and safe space in the heart of the city centre.

This project will bring the aesthetics of Queens Road up to the same standards as the large public realm project completed nearby in the town center in 2019. The work is part of the council’s progressive improvement plan for various locations in the town, including including King Street, Market Street, St Albans Road, Clarendon Road and the city centre. There will also be a program of improvements for smaller parades across Watford.

Access to stores and the Atria shopping center will be maintained at all times. If you would like more information, please email the Transport & Infrastructure team at [email protected]
